Elon Musk has long fueled speculation about his ambitious space plans, with some online jokes even suggesting extraterrestrial origins. A Reddit post from October 29, 2020, spotlighted a key clause in the Starlink terms of use. SpaceX is gearing up for its beta launch at $99 per month and adapting the service for Mars colonization. The terms state that no Earth-based laws will apply on Mars, nor will any terrestrial government hold authority there.
"The parties acknowledge that Mars is a free planet and that no Earth-based government has any authority or sovereignty over Martian activities. Accordingly, disputes will be settled according to principles of self-determination established in good faith at the time of the Martian colonization," the document reads.
As reported by The Independent on October 20, 2020, the initial phase of Mars colonization involves establishing a self-sufficient city that won't rely on Earth supplies. Musk hasn't specified a timeline but confirmed the project is advancing to be ready before a potential cataclysmic event on Earth, such as a comet impact, supervolcano eruption, or nuclear conflict.
SpaceX's Starship, designed for Mars missions, has completed several flight and landing tests at the company's Texas site. Musk anticipates the first uncrewed mission as early as 2024.
Musk has repeatedly discussed building a Mars city. In 2019, he proposed deploying 1,000 Starships to deliver resources, estimating construction would take about 20 years—a timeline some experts view skeptically. In March 2020, he expressed concern that the city might not emerge in his lifetime.
