NASA Extends Ingenuity's Mars Mission: Scouting Ahead for Perseverance Rover

NASA is thrilled with Ingenuity's achievements and has extended its mission on Mars. The helicopter will now support the Perseverance rover by scouting sites and targets for the next 30 sols (Martian days)—a first for planetary exploration.

Originally tasked with demonstrating powered flight on Mars, Ingenuity has succeeded with four flights. Now, it enters a new phase aiding Perseverance, providing invaluable data for future aerial explorers on Mars and beyond.

"Ingenuity's technology demonstration was a resounding success," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. "With the rotorcraft in excellent health, we'll leverage it to advance near-term science goals for Perseverance while benefiting future aerial platforms."

Previous flights involved hovering or short round trips. In its fourth flight, Ingenuity traveled 133 meters south before returning precisely to Wright Brothers Field.

The fifth flight will be one-way, landing at a new site. If successful, new operations begin in about 10 days.

This phase features one-way flights demanding precise maneuvers and advanced aerial scouting. Engineers are embracing higher risks for greater rewards.

As of sol 66 (April 26), Perseverance had moved just 10 meters south in Jezero Crater to assess targets. Over the coming weeks, it will travel about 2 kilometers southward, targeting key rock outcrops.

Ingenuity will scout these sites from the air, suggest routes, and capture stereo images for elevation maps.

Operations Extended to Late August

Flight cadence slows to once every two or three weeks, timed to avoid disrupting Perseverance's science work.

After 30 sols, the team will evaluate and wrap up by late August. This allows Perseverance's first science phase to conclude by mid-October, ahead of Mars solar conjunction, when the Sun disrupts communications.

Perseverance will then head north and west to Jezero Crater's ancient river delta. Ingenuity, mission accomplished and beyond, will remain behind.
